THE PROJECT:

CARDS AGAINST EXTINCTION
"Cards Against Extinction" is a growing set of hand-printed motifs that reflect ecological grievances and concerns about past, present and anticipated environmental impacts of global heating and human mistreatment of nature. It focusses on the effects on non-human species and their vulnerabilities. Themes include dying coral, deforestation, deadly heatwaves, bushfires and more. Each motif is accompanied by a QR code that takes the viewer to the project’s website, which contains background information and offers opportunities for engagement. The main consideration that informed the concept of the CAE project is public display and reach of the artworks. This potential engagement is meant to be achieved by displaying the cards through miniature galleries in the urban/public space to help improve the distribution and reach of the messages, the motifs are also printed on pre-loved t-shirts and recycled tote bags.

THE ARTIVIST:

SABINE CARTER

Designer, artist, activist and researcher

“As a graphic designer who is also passionate about the natural environment, I wonder how I can use my skills to raise more awareness of the ongoing ecocide and the accelerating climate crisis. I have been following climate science for more than 30 years. I feel sad and concerned about the consequences of a changing climate for humans and non-humans. We have got so much to lose, e.g. the beauty of the coral reefs, some of the amazing wildlife only found in Australia, not to mention the ancient forests.

I am excited to collaborate with like-hearted people who share my concerns. Making art is a great way to connect and express ideas. Hopefully more people will join us in future.”
